LEGAL TOOLS FOR WAVE PROTECTION
There are two types of legal strategies to protect waves: reactive and proactive. Reactive strategies operate in the face of imminent threats, as you will see in the section "What to do in the face of threats". In contrast, proactive strategies seek to generate norms or formal wave protection mechanisms that prevent threats, that is, that provide longr-term preventive protection for waves. These mechanisms offer a more robust guarantee of protection.
WHAT TO DO IN THE FACE OF THREATS?
Surf zones and marine-coastal ecosystems face multiple threats that compromise their equilibrium, accessibility, and log-term survival. From the alteration of natural conditions due to climate change to the direct impact of human activities, these pressures demand urgent and coordinated attention. These threats affect not only surfers but also coastal communities, marine biodiversity and the health of the oceans as a whole.
There are six key thereats: climate change, extractive industries, infrastructure projects, contamination from landfills, waste pollution, and access restrictions. Our coasts face these specific risks, which is why we must promote protection, education, and governance actions to ensure their sustainability.
